Find out more

While the full details of the revision remain under development, the direction is clear: ISO 9001:2026 will strengthen leadership accountability, reinforce ethics and culture, sharpen risk and supply chain management, and address the impact of digital technologies.

Anticipated Key Changes in ISO 9001:2026

Based on working group reports and industry signals, the following areas are expected to see enhancements:

  •    Quality Culture & Ethical Leadership

Greater emphasis on leadership integrity, decision-making, and promoting a culture where quality is a shared value, not just compliance.

  •    Resilience & Risk Management

Refinements to risk-based thinking, ensuring organizations take proactive steps to identify, assess, and mitigate emerging risks, including climate change and supply chain disruptions.

  •    Supply Chain Oversight

Stronger accountability for outsourced processes, products, and services reflecting global reliance on interconnected supply chains.

  •    Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility

Building on the 2024 climate change amendment, ISO 9001:2026 is expected to integrate sustainability considerations into the “context of the organization.”

  •    Integration of Digital Tools & AI

Organizations using AI, data analytics, and digital monitoring tools must validate their reliability to ensure decisions based on technology are accurate and transparent.

  •    Organizational Knowledge & Change Management

Updated expectations for how organizations manage knowledge and adapt processes in response to change, including hybrid work and technological transformation.

Expected Timeline for ISO 9001:2026 Revision

- Draft International Standard (DIS):   Q4 2025 – Q1 2026

- Final Draft International Standard (FDIS):   Mid-2026

- Official Publication of ISO 9001:2026:   September 2026

- Transition Period:   3 years (until late 2029)

This gives organizations sufficient time to prepare, but those who act early will gain a competitive advantage.

What Certified Organizations Should Do Now

To prepare effectively for ISO 9001:2026, organizations should take proactive steps well ahead of publication:

1.        Monitor Updates

Stay informed on developments through reliable sources such as International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and Certification Bodies like ISOCERT for regular updates and insights.

2.       Conduct a Gap Assessment

Once the DIS is released, benchmark your current QMS against anticipated requirements. Conduct pre-audit assessments to identify gaps and readiness levels.

3.       Update Policies & Leadership Practices

Begin embedding ethics, integrity, and quality culture into your corporate policies and leadership communications.

4.       Strengthen Supply Chain Controls

Review supplier qualification, monitoring, and accountability measures to meet likely new requirements.

5.       Validate Digital & AI Tools

Ensure that software and AI systems used in monitoring and decision-making are validated, transparent, and auditable.

6.       Plan Training & Awareness

Prepare teams through transition-focused training and awareness webinars to build confidence and competence ahead of implementation.
